QUEEN ANN

As a statue she sits on her summer throne
& contemplates the rhythm of the passing clouds.
I wonder where my servant lover is, she moans.
I am bored by absolute power & the glitter of my wealth.
Ah, if I could drown my sorrows & questions in the fountain
of eternal youth while soldiers salute me & march on
& die so happily for so little reward or recognition.
I grant them a footnote in the history of my queendom.
I grant them a medal for services rendered
for queen & country & some marigolds.
